Learn to prepare a cheeseburger!

Make sure you have permission from an adult helper. Ask for help using the stove.

Step 1: Wash your hands with soap and hot water. It is important for anyone who handles food to have clean hands.

Step 2: In a bowl, use your clean hands to mix the hamburger meat. Add a few dashes of salt and pepper, but don’t add too much. A dash is about 1/8 of a teaspoon. Never eat raw hamburger meat.

Step 3: Make 4 patties from the hamburger meat. A patty should be round and about half an inch thick.

Step 4: Have an adult helper turn the stove onto medium heat. Pour 1 tablespoon of cooking oil into the pan. Have the adult helper place the patties in the hot oil. Let the patties cook for 5 minutes.

Step 5: While the patties start cooking, wash your hands again with soap and hot water before you go to the next step. This is very important because it keeps any germs from the raw food from getting spread to the cooked food. Also be sure that the bowl you used gets washed before it touches any other food.

Step 6: As the patties cook, watch to make sure they do not burn. The patties should turn dark brown on the bottom but not black. After five minutes of cooking, use the spatula to turn each patty over and let them cook for 5 minutes on the other side.  *Just because the meat turns brown, doesn't mean it is done cooking. Make sure the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature kills germs*

Step 7: Use the cooking thermometer to make sure the inside of each patty is at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit. The thermometer should be inserted sideways to reach the middle of the patty. If the patty is less than 160 degrees, let it cook some more.

Step 8: Once the temperature of the inside of the patties is at least 160 degrees, use the spatula to
remove them from the pan. Then place the cheese on the top to let it melt.

Step 9: When the cheeseburger is done, put it on the bun. You could add ketchup, mustard, pickles, tomatoes and lettuce!

Step 10: Wash your hands with soap and hot water before eating. Wash the cooking pan, spatula, bowl and thermometer with hot water and soap.

Step 11: Enjoy! Add some fries too!
