Keeping organized with taxonomy

Scientists use a special system to classify animals called taxonomy [tak-son-uh-mee]. Taxonomy groups living things together according to their similarities and differences. There are seven main groups used by scientists.

Each group is split into several categories. For example, the kingdom group has five categories. Graphic by Samantha Walker, American Society of Animal Science

All animals, including people, fall under the Animalia [an-uh-mey-lee-uh] Kingdom. Plants, fungi and bacteria fall under the other four categories. Graphic by Samantha Walker, American Society of Animal Science

Let’s try to classify an animal from its species all the way up to its kingdom.
